TAP Air Portugal

Bird Aviation & TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal, a major airline, engaged Bird Aviation for comprehensive base maintenance services. This collaboration served as a critical evaluation of Bird Aviation’s capabilities in preparation for the upcoming 2024/2025 season.

The task:

Bird Aviation was tasked with performing a C1 Check on TAP Air Portugal’s aircraft. This project was designed to test Bird Aviation’s proficiency and reliability in handling extensive maintenance tasks. The main objectives were to ensure aircraft safety, comply with regulatory requirements, minimize downtime through efficient maintenance practices, optimize operational performance, reduce overall costs, and provide exceptional customer service.

The project demanded stringent adherence to several critical requirements. The most crucial was achieving a sharp Turnaround Time (TAT). Timely shipping of materials, strict compliance with manufacturer maintenance manuals (such as MPD and AMM), regulatory compliance, efficient inspection procedures, and effective repair and replacement were all essential components. Additionally, thorough documentation and reporting were mandatory to meet industry standards and regulatory expectations.

The project involved active participation from two TAP representatives who were on-site. Their roles included inspecting the aircraft, overseeing the work being performed, negotiating manhours for additional tasks beyond the initial work package, and conducting daily meetings with Bird Aviation’s shift manager.

Bird Aviation ensured the TAP representatives were well-accommodated, providing them with a dedicated office space. The representatives expressed high levels of satisfaction with the arrangements and the overall work environment.

Bird Aviation employed a suite of technologies and tools to manage the project effectively:

  • MS Project for planning and scheduling.
  • ALKY for maintenance management.
  • Excel for data tracking and reporting.
  • Airbus World for accessing specific maintenance information and guidelines.

Challenges and Solutions:

The project encountered multiple constraints and limitations, including resource and time constraints, regulatory compliance challenges, operational pressures, and budget limitations. These factors required careful management and strategic planning to ensure the project’s success.

The project faced several challenges, including the sharp achievement of TAT, continuous supervision by TAP representatives, and the need for logistics support for additional items. These challenges were successfully addressed through strategic planning, effective communication, and robust logistics management.

Results and Achievements:

The project concluded with the aircraft being released right on time, demonstrating Bird Aviation’s commitment to meeting deadlines. The production team’s high-quality performance was evident, supported by rapid and effective logistics and meticulous planning.

Bird Aviation successfully met all project objectives. The high-quality maintenance work ensured aircraft safety and regulatory compliance, while efficient processes minimized downtime and optimized operational performance. The project also achieved cost-effectiveness and delivered excellent customer service, aligning with the client’s goals.

While no formal written feedback was received, TAP Air Portugal’s decision to schedule the next aircraft C-check with Bird Aviation clearly indicated their satisfaction with the performance. The project led to several measurable benefits, including increased efficiency, data-driven decision-making, cost-effectiveness, quality improvements, enhanced safety and compliance, better team organization, and more transparent communications between departments.

Future Plans:

Building on the success of this project, TAP Air Portugal is considering Bird Aviation for a substantial line of seven aircraft for the 2024-2025 Base Maintenance season. This potential expansion highlights the strong and growing partnership between the two companies and sets the stage for continued collaboration.

This case study showcases Bird Aviation’s dedication to excellence, adaptability in addressing challenges, and commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring successful project outcomes and laying a strong foundation for future endeavors.
